Now Spring is here, keep a look out for hedgehogs as they emerge from hibernation, sleepy, very thirsty and heading for the nearest source of water. Hedgehogs are good swimmers BUT many die in garden ponds as the sides are too steep for them to climb out. Please make your pond hedgehog-proof by creating a sloping edge and a ramp
or green thick coated wire anchored at the top and bottom of the pond to provide an escape ladder.
If you are pulling down old sheds or buildings, you may find a hedgehog under there so keep a look out. Finally, when using a strimmer make sure there are no hogs in the vicinity, so many suffer serious injuries every year from strimming accidents. In fact, I’ll check the garden for our prickly friends before Mum calls all the dogs for dinner, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.
